In order to accurately describe RISAA's Junior Angler of the Year
Audra Medeiros, you need your own dictionary full of superlatives.
This super-achieving daughter of Steve and Lynn Medeiros seems to excel
at just about everything she does, wheather it be scholastics, athletics,
extra-curricular activities, community service, or last but not least, fishing.
You would think that with all her accomplishments and successes, this amazing
15 year old would have her head so high in the clouds that she'd be oblivious
to everyone around her, but that's not Audra's style. Those who know
her best know that her best attribute is her personality.Audra Medeiros is first and foremost an outstanding scholastic achiever. A 10th grade student at Coventry High, she is enrolled in all honors programs in Geometry, Euro-American History, Chemistry and English. Anyone who knows anything about education realizes that one does not maintain high grades in four advanced programs without having disciplined and diligent study habits. If missed her at our last monthly meeting, it was because Audra, who hates to miss a meeting, had made the responsible decision to stay home and study for some important upcoming exams. Being involved in many different activities means having to have her priorities in order, and with Audra, school work always comes first. When the school bell rings at Coventry High signaling the end of the day, most students can't
wait to bolt out the door, but not Audra. Her many extra-curricular
activities include student council executive board, homecoming committee
(parade co-chair), Alton Jones Leadership Conference participant, state student
council, "Secret Pal" program, Transitions Program mentor, and yearbook staff.
It's simply amazing that while devoting to much time and effort to all of
these activities, she is able to maintain a grade point average that currently
has her ranked as 3rd in a class of 550 students! You'd think with her busy schedule, Audra wouldn't have time for church and community service participation, but not so. A communicant of Sts. John & Paul Church in Coventry, she helps the church out as a vacation Bible shool helper and is enrolled in the church's Confirmation II program. So how does this well-rounded young lady stack up with a rod and reel in her hands? Good enough to win Junior Angler of the Year for both the West Bay Anglers (1997) and the R.I.S.A.A. (1998)! Noteworthy catches for our club include tournament trophies for bass, bluefish, bonito, fluke and scup. According to her dad, the only thing she needs to develop as an angler is to have more patience when the going is slow. Audra loves fishing for blues when the surface action heats up, and this past summer she landed her first bonito on light tackle. She's improving as an angler every year, and hopefully some of our club's fishing seminars have contributed to her development. Audra's resume seems to expand continually, as she is always looking for new ways to challenge herself. She's recently started taking lessons in acoustic guitar, so don't be surprised to see her on MTV some day! Oh, by the way, did I mention she also was named R.I.S.A.A. Junior Member of the Year for outstanding participation in virtually every function that our club has promoted in the past year? So what does the future hold for Audra Medeiros? R.I.'s first female governor? The next female rocket scientist? The possibilities seem endless for this hard-working teenager. Having attentive and supportive parents like Steve and Lynn also help to make anything possible for this fine young lady. I can even see her as a future president of the R.I.S.A.A. if her dad ever decides to thow in the towel! |
