What's it like to cook 600 hamburgers and 450 hot dogs in 90 minutes? Just ask Bob Masse who served as chief grillmaster for the RISAA Take-A-Kid Fishing Day, a job he performs with pleasure every year.
Bob begins his Kids Fishing Day duties on the night before by meeting
up with Nancy Getchell & Lynn Medeiros at BJ's Wholesale where they
pick up tons of food, condiments and paper goods that they will need to
feed 450 people. Then they drive to the marina to unload and meet
up with the other volunteers who are setting up tents, etc. All
of the food needs to be packed in ice overnight. Bob then
drove home and cut onions until midnight.
On Saturday, the fishing day, Bob met other volunteers at the marina at
5:45 a.m. setting things up in preparation for the arrival of all of
the kids and RISAA volunteers. Then, while most members are out
fishing, Bob and the rest of the shore crew spend their time getting
the food and grill ready. And, when the first of the boats come
back after fishing, Bob is already on the grill - cooking away.
Many offer to relieve him so he can take a break, but he politely
refuses, flipping burgers at a feverish pace. Top that all off
with the fact that he's one of the last to leave, helping to pack up so
the marina is as clean as when we first arrived.
We're PROUD to have BOB as a RISAA member!
